How do I remove Road Tar from my Car?

Road Work AheadThis question has been asked of us several times in the past few weeks so it must mean one thing – Road Construction. When we grew up in Chicago, we used to tell people that we had two seasons – Winter and Road Construction. Here in Maine, I tell people from away that we have two seasons – Winter and two months of bad snow skiing.

Nonetheless, the Maine Road Construction season is in full swing and I wanted to take this opportunity to educate our loyal customers on how to remove road tar from your vehicle. First, it’s never as easy as it sounds. At the first sign of this tar appearing on your car, I would recommend a solvent-based product specifically made for removing tar. PLEASE be sure to follow all manufacturer’s written instructions for these professional grade products. Unfortunately, no car wash will be able to remove this with just a wash.

When applying to the affected areas of your car, take care to not rub excessively since doing so will scratch the finish of your vehicle. It is usually best to apply the solvent liberally to the affected area and allow the product to do its job by breaking down the tar. It is also recommended to work in a well ventilated area that is shaded from direct sunlight. Once the cleaning agent begins to break down the contaminant, you can use a clean soft cloth to blot the area clean. This process may have to be repeated several times for best results.

Finally, once the vehicle is cleaned and then washed, it is strongly advised to place a good coat of polish or wax on this area as any existing wax would have been removed during this process.

If this process does not interest you, that’s why we’re here. At Sudzie, we offer a full complement of detailing services including tar removal. Along with road construction season also comes line painting and lane striping. Again, the sooner you attend to this problem the easier it will be for you to have it removed. Pavement paint is much more difficult to remove than road tar so give us a call and we’ll see what we can do to help.

What about Bird Poop?

SeagullBird droppings are very acidic and if not removed right away, I guarantee you that the finish of your car will be stained permanently. Again, care needs to be taken when removing this so you don’t scratch the car’s finish. Do not remove with a towel or cloth because you will scratch the finish. Bring the car to Sudzie and let us remove the poop for you. If you can’t get here right away, take a garden hose and spray with high pressure to remove as much as you can until you have the car washed professionally.
